Pakistan has taken stringent measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, including imposing Section 144 in Rawalpindi until October 17. This restriction, effective from October 10 to 17, prohibits various forms of political assemblies, gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, and similar activities.
The SCO Meetings are scheduled to be held in Pakistani cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization aims to strengthen mutual trust among member states, promote cooperation in areas such as trade, economy, science and technology, and jointly ensure peace, security, and stability in the region.
Key Security Measures:
- Deployment of Troops: Pakistan Army troops have been deployed in Islamabad from October 5 to 17 under Article 245 of the Constitution to maintain law and order during the SCO summit.
- Closure of Public Spaces: Marriage halls, restaurants, and cafes will remain closed for five days in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
- Enhanced Jail Security: Security has been tightened at Adiala Jail, where former Pakistan PM Imran Khan is being held, preventing meetings with supporters, lawyers, or family members.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the summit, marking a significant attendance after nine years. The SCO meeting, comprising nine full members including China, India, Iran, and Russia, is scheduled to take place in Islamabad on October 15 and 16.
These measures reflect Pakistan’s efforts to ensure a secure and successful summit, showcasing its commitment to regional cooperation and stability.
