In a recent interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes, US Vice President Kamala Harris addressed Ukraine’s push to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), emphasizing the importance of Kyiv’s involvement in any negotiations with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been seeking an invitation from the US to join the military alliance, believing it would provide leverage in his push to negotiate an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, Harris declined to explicitly support Ukraine’s NATO bid, stating that the issue would be addressed “if and when it arrives at that point.” She prioritized supporting Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russia’s aggression.
The Biden administration has maintained that Ukraine’s NATO membership is a longer-term proposition, contingent upon the country strengthening its defense capabilities and internal institutions.
Harris underscored her commitment to involving Ukraine in any negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing, “Ukraine must have a say in the future of Ukraine.” This stance contrasts with her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, who suggested he would directly negotiate with Putin.
The interview comes amidst growing tensions and varying stances on Ukraine’s NATO membership. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico recently expressed opposition to Ukraine’s bid, while Harris’ appearance on 60 Minutes marks part of her media blitz ahead of Election Day.
As the US presidential election approaches, Harris’ stance on Ukraine’s NATO membership and her commitment to involving Kyiv in negotiations underscore her foreign policy priorities.
