In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday, prompting vows of retaliation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The attack, which targeted three military bases around Tel Aviv, marked Iran’s second direct strike on Israel after a missile and drone attack in April.

Netanyahu warned that Iran had made a “Big Mistake” and would pay for its actions. “Whoever attacks us, we attack them,” he stated. The Israeli military announced that it would continue to strike powerfully across the Middle East, with military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari vowing to act against Iran.

The United States, a key ally of Israel, expressed support for the country and warned Iran of “severe consequences.” US President Joe Biden stated that he would discuss a response with Netanyahu. The United Nations Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the escalating crisis.

India, meanwhile, called for restraint from all parties involved and urged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict. “We are deeply concerned at the escalation of security situation in West Asia and reiterate our call for restraint by all concerned and protection of civilians,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Lebanon’s health ministry reporting 55 deaths on Tuesday. The total death toll since Israel and Hezbollah began trading cross-border fire after the Gaza war erupted on October 7, 2023, stands at 1,873.

As tensions continue to rise, international leaders are calling for a ceasefire. UN chief Antonio Guterres stated, “This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire.” The UK has chartered a flight out of Lebanon for British citizens, citing the “volatile” situation.

The crisis has also sparked concerns about the potential displacement of civilians, with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati estimating that up to one million people may be displaced.
