Vice President Kamala Harris Accepts CNN Debate Invitation, Challenges Trump to Another Showdown
In a move to sway voters in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted CNN’s invitation to debate former President Donald Trump on October 23. This will be the second debate between the two candidates, following their face-off in Philadelphia on September 10.
Harris’ campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, stated, “Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to share a stage with Donald Trump.” Harris herself tweeted, “I will gladly accept a second presidential debate” and hopes Trump “will join” her.
However, Trump expressed hesitation, citing early voting as a reason. “The problem with another debate is that it’s just too late, voting has already started,” he said at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina.
This development comes after Trump’s previous mixed signals on participating in another debate. Last week, he suggested openness to a third debate, saying “maybe if I got in the right mood.” Yet, his campaign spokesperson referred CNN to an earlier Truth Social post stating, “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!”
The proposed October debate would follow the format of the first 2024 presidential debate in June, with moderators’ questions and no live studio audience.
The stakes are high, as the previous CNN debate between Trump and President Joe Biden significantly impacted the campaign’s trajectory. Biden’s poor performance led to his eventual withdrawal and endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Will Trump accept the debate invitation? Only time will tell.
