In a sudden escalation of hostilities, Iran fired missiles at Israel, prompting civilians to seek shelter, according to the Israeli military. The attack comes as Israel continues its ground offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah, the militant group that lost its commander Hassan Nasrallah and a senior Iranian official, Abbas Nilforoushan, in recent Israeli strikes in Beirut.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the missile launch at 10:08 pm IST, citing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility, stating it was in response to the killings of Nasrallah, Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, and Nilforoushan. Israeli media reported up to 100 missiles were launched.

US President Joe Biden has ordered the military to support Israel’s defense and intercept Iranian missiles. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are closely monitoring the situation from the White House.

Videos show debris from intercepted missiles raining down on Tel Aviv, with blasts reported in Jerusalem and other areas. The Israeli military has instructed civilians to remain in protected spaces until further notice.

Air traffic has been halted at Ben Gurion Airport, and Israel’s airspace has been closed, with flights diverted. Neighboring Jordan has also suspended air traffic.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has urged citizens to remain alert and follow the Home Front Command’s instructions.
