Ken Pillonel, the engineering student behind this achievement, spent months working on the project in his spare time. He reverse-engineered Apple’s custom C94 connector and designed a custom PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that fits inside the iPhone X’s body. The result is a fully functional USB-C port that can charge the phone and transfer data.

Pillonel’s achievement raises questions about Apple’s reluctance to adopt the USB-C standard, despite using it in their laptops and tablets. The company has faced criticism for contributing to electronic waste with its proprietary Lightning port, which is incompatible with most other devices.
