Mumbai, September 26, 2024: In a significant verdict, a Mumbai court has convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya. The Metropolitan Magistrate 25th Court, Mazgaon, sentenced Raut to 15 days imprisonment and imposed a fine on him.
The case stems from allegations made by Raut against Medha Somaiya and her husband, accusing them of involvement in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets under the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction. However, the court deemed these allegations baseless and completely defamatory.
Medha Somaiya had filed the complaint, stating that Raut’s accusations had damaged her and her husband’s reputation. The court’s verdict is a significant setback for Raut, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) party.
This conviction highlights the importance of responsible speech, especially for public figures. The court’s decision sends a strong message that baseless allegations and defamation will not be tolerated.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) party has yet to respond to the verdict. Raut’s legal team may consider appealing the decision.
