Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pune, scheduled for today, September 26, 2024, has been cancelled due to the relentless heavy rainfall in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, predicting severe weather conditions throughout the day.

The cancellation comes as a precautionary measure, considering the logistical challenges posed by the waterlogged and muddy conditions at the S.P. College grounds, the original venue for the PM’s rally. Alternative arrangements were being made at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch near Swargate Metro Station, but ultimately, the administration confirmed the cancellation.

PM Modi was slated to flag off a Metro train and launch development projects worth over ₹22,600 crore, including the inauguration of the Pune Metro section from District Court to Swargate. This project marks the completion of Phase-1 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, with the underground segment costing around ₹1,810 crore.

The heavy rainfall has severely disrupted life in Pune, with the district administration declaring a public holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad. The IMD’s orange alert follows a red alert issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.

The situation remains precarious, with the water resources department warning of possible additional water discharge from dams on Mutha and Pawana rivers between September 24 and 29. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates.

Stay tuned for further updates on the situation in Pune.
