Badlapur Sexual Assault Accused Akshay Shinde Opens Fire at Police, Shot Dead

Mumbai, Maharashtra – In a dramatic turn of events, Akshay Shinde, the 23-year-old accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school in Badlapur town, was shot dead by police on 23 September 2024 after he allegedly snatched a revolver from an officer and fired at them.

According to the Thane Police, Shinde was taken into custody by the crime branch from Taloja jail at 5:30 pm in connection with a fresh case filed by his wife. While being transported to Thane for investigation, Shinde seized the opportunity to grab the officer’s revolver and fired two to three rounds, injuring one of the officers.

In self-defense, another officer opened fire on Shinde, resulting in fatal injuries. The incident occurred near Mumbra bypass, and Shinde was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.

Shinde was accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school in Badlapur town, where he was employed on a contractual basis to clean toilets. The alleged assaults took place on separate days within 10 days of his joining on August 1. The case sparked widespread outrage, with massive protests erupting in the town and at the local railway station.

The police had filed charges against Shinde, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had submitted a second charge sheet in the case. The incident highlights the growing concern over sexual violence against minors and the need for stringent measures to ensure safety in educational institutions.

The Thane Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding Shinde’s death.
