Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has sparked controversy with a cryptic post on Instagram, seemingly targeting Alia Bhatt’s recently released film, Jigra. The movie, which hit theaters on Friday, received a lukewarm response at the box office, earning approximately Rs 3.58 crore (net) across all languages in India on its first day.
Kangana’s post, which didn’t mention any names, read, “When you destroy women-centric films and make sure that they don’t work, they don’t work, even when you make them. Read that again. Thanks (sic).” The message has fueled speculation that it’s aimed at Jigra, which failed to impress audiences and reviewers.
Directed by Vasan Bala, Jigra stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina in key roles. Critics have panned the film, citing its linear storyline and lack of depth. India Today’s review noted, “Jigra could have been a much better film if the story wasn’t so linear… The brother-sister angle around which the crux of the entire film hangs is so feeble that it doesn’t take too long for the thread to break.”
Kangana’s comments have reignited the debate on women-centric cinema and its box office performance. While some argue that such films often lack substance, others contend that they face unfair competition from bigger-budget productions.
The actress’s post has sparked a lively discussion on social media, with fans and critics weighing in on the merits of women-centric films. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Jigra’s underwhelming performance has raised questions about the future of such films in Bollywood.
