Mumbai, September 23, 2024: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has shared his heartfelt reaction to Laapataa Ladies being chosen as India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards. The film, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, has received widespread critical acclaim since its release in March 2024.
In an official statement, Aamir Khan expressed his pride and gratitude, saying, “We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. I would like to thank the selection committee of the Film Federation of India, which chose our film to represent India at the Oscars.” He also thanked the audience, media, and film fraternity for their support.
Laapataa Ladies, a social comedy-drama, tells the story of two brides in rural India who accidentally get swapped during a train journey in 2001. The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav in lead roles, alongside Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.
This marks the third time Aamir Khan Productions has had a film selected as India’s official Oscar entry, following Lagaan (2001) and Taare Zameen Par (2007). Lagaan remains the only Indian film to have secured a top-five nomination at the 74th Academy Awards.
Kiran Rao’s Kindling Productions and Jio Studios have jointly produced Laapataa Ladies with Aamir Khan Productions. The film’s selection has been met with enthusiasm from the cast and crew, including Nitanshi Goel, who thanked Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan for their support.
As Laapataa Ladies vies for international recognition, Aamir Khan’s statement concluded, “Here’s hoping that Laapataa Ladies is able to win the hearts of the members of the Academy. Love.” The 97th Academy Awards are set to take place in 2025.
